One-Day Short Course: Holographics in Packaging
Trends in holographic packaging are revolutionizing the costs, aesthetics and ecological credentials of the technology. So as part of this year’s Holo-pack•Holo-print®, there will be a one-day short course on Packaging with Holographics.
This practical course is for brand managers, packaging designers, promotional agencies and converters. You will be introduced to the design of holographic materials for packaging, and the characteristics of holographic packaging materials and technologies. Amazing advances in production technologies for holographic packaging are now offering unheard of possibilities for brand enhancement and promotion using these eye-catching materials. At this Course you will learn about these new advances and how to use them to best advantage for packaging.

This will be a practical course, examining design for holographics, including a real-time demonstration of design using popular design programs such as Illustrator® and PhotoShop®. It will provide detailed information on different holographic technologies and materials, to guide designers and converters in working with these materials, and offer information on why and how effectively holographic packaging improves shelf appeal and catches the customer’s eye.
The course will include numerous case-studies and reference to actual packaging examples.
9.00 am: Welcome and Intro to Packaging with Holographics
Glenn Wood, Reconnaissance International`
9.15 am Blackberry, Crest, Gillette - From Concept to Store Shelf for Three Very Different Products
Tim Cain, Breit Technology
The Cast and Cure UV embossing method has been successfully used to provide brand identity and shelf appeal for several major brands. Breit Technology managed the whole process, so Tim Cain will describe the process whereby the design concept was proposed and accepted for each of these three brands. Graphic designs were chosen which would maximise the capability of the new technology taking into account considerations such as cost and eco-friendliness.
10.00 am Holographics & Designing with New Features I
Nigel Abraham, 3DCD
The language of holograms and similar diffractive features is fundamentally different to the language of printed graphics. Nigel Abraham takes you through the essential components of design for diffractive imaging, covering depth and 3D; multiple images and animation, kinetics, color, security features and integration with printed graphics. He will also discuss how the selection of design/diffractive techniques could work for different projects and markets.
Nigel started as a holographer in the late 1970s so has a wealth of experience. He has made holograms for promotional display, packaging and security, and is now the lead holographer for Microsoft’s holographic disks.
10.45 am Refreshment Break
11.00 am: Holographics & Designing with New Features II
Jeremy Sie
In a live demonstration, Jeremy Sie will show how to create these design features in common design programs. Understanding how to utilize the various features available and how to supply graphics that are compatible with this process, is critical to a successful project. Jeremy Sie will guide you through the design stages and demystify the technology, so that you or your art director and designer have complete control of the diffractive design process to produce the effects envisioned.
Jeremy Sie graduated from the Art Institute of Colorado and has an impressive portfolio of print, web and holographic designs.
11.45 am Q&A
Noon: Lunch
1.00 pm Eye Tracking: Establishing the Value of Holographics
Barbara Barclay, Tobii
Today’s eye tracking technology allows for close or distant monitoring of subjects’ eye movements. This has proved of great interest to companies such as Google and Microsoft which need to know what attracts and retains interest on-screen. Eye-tracking is also useful in quantifying the attention created by packaging design in-store, thus helping to demonstrate the value of holographic packaging.
1:30 pm Working with Holographic Packaging Materials I
This session will explain the characteristics and application suitability of holographic materials, covering direct UV embossing, PET, OPP, transfer films and opaque or clear materials. The presentation will include discussion and illustration of numerous samples.
2.30 pm Refreshment Break
2.45 pm Holographic Packaging Materials II
3.30 pm Have Packaging Fun with Holographics!
Gloria Hazen, G Force
Gloria has taken many holographic packs from concept to shelf, so she offers insights on how to enjoy working with holographics, using examples for Warner Brothers, Lion’s Gate, Paramount, Coty, and Arden.
3.45 pm. Panel Discussion - all presenters
Chair: Glenn Wood
